1. SA: New 200 Riyal with MOTION Switch and LEAD Micro-Mirror
 
 
  • The Saudi Central Bank has just issued a new banknote of 200 Riyals (SAR200.1) to commemorate the Fifth Anniversary of the launching of the “Vision 2030”.
  • This is the first note to read “Saudi Central Bank“, the new name of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority since November 2020.
The main new security features are:
  • MOTION Switch by CRANE CURRENCY:
    • MOTION Switch is an evolution of MOTION that let allows the creation of a visual effect from two images. When the note is tilted, the icons switch and move perpendicularly at the same time. MOTION and MOTION Switch can be augmented with UV fluorescence and micro-text.
    • It is similar to that used in the 50, 100 and 500 denominations of this series.
    • MOTION Switch first captured the industry’s attention when specified in the current series of US$100 banknote. Since then, in addition to the US, Saudi Arabia and England (previous series), MOTION Switch has been specified in the high denomination banknotes of Egypt and Sweden as well as in some commemorative banknotes, e.g., Thailand and South Korea.

2. Portals Paper: Official Press Release - Acquisition of Fedrigoni’s Security business (Italy)
 
 
  • Portals Paper, a UK-headquartered global specialist in banknote and security paper production, will acquire Fedrigoni’s Security business based in Bollate, Italy.
  • Both parties have signed an respective agreement. The completion of these two separate transactions is expected to occur during the course of 2021.
  • Portals is also acquiring an option to potentially purchase certain banknote paper and passport paper assets (including
    production machinery) from the Fabriano (Italy) security division of Fedrigoni.
  • This acquisition further supports Portals commitment to the currency market following over €25m of investment in the banknote paper operations in the last few years.
  • Fedrigoni’s security business has a solid portfolio of security threads and holograms with large volume customers throughout the world. Portals Paper intention is to invest in an integrated innovation strategy focused on increased security and durability for currency and passport substrate applications.

3. Morocco: Highest population w/o access to banking institutions
 
 
  • Morocco proportionally has the largest population of unbanked citizens, standing at 71%.
  • The British research platform  MERCHANT MACHINE divides “unbanked” to mean any individual who does not have access to the services of a bank, or other similar financial institutions.
  • By this metric, approximately 26.2 million Moroccans do not currently have access to a bank account.
  • Other countries with high numbers of unbanked citizens are Vietnam (69%), Egypt at 67%, the Philippines at 66%.

4. Russia: Increase in higher denominations
 
 
  • Goznak (high security printer and substrate manufacturer from Russia) recorded an increase in the number of high denomination banknotes in circulation during the recent months of the pandemic.
  • Those higher denominations were stored at home as a saving tool - a phenomenon which can be noticed also in other countries.
  • Banknotes were no longer the first choice of payment amid the pandemic.
